Head lice prevention:

In the season of COVID, FLU, and RSV. Don't forget about our crawling friends... head lice. During the colder months when coats and hats are coming in daily, it is important to keep personal items separated as much as possible in school. Remember that head lice do not carry disease and they are not a sign of uncleanliness. Lice cannot jump or fly, they are transmitted by direct contact.

Ways to prevent the spread of lice:

  • Do not share combs, hair brushes, towels, hats, bike or batting helmets, sleeping bags, or pillows.

  • Avoid hanging hats and coats next to others’ clothing.

  • Do not pile coats up on the end of lunch tables. Have each child keep their coat and hat at their seat.

  • Avoid sharing pillows, cloth seats, or shaggy rugs

What to look for:

  • Excessive scratching of head – especially at the back of the head just above the neck.

  • Nits on the hair – these are usually pearly-gray in color and are attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.  Nits are distinguished from dandruff because they stick to the hair shaft.
